Mature Dog

This chap came into rescue as his owner had passed away and his dog was due to be pts.  LRSEC stepped in quickly and we have now him safe in foster while he gets back to full health and fitness.    He had a limited horizon in his recent past and the foster has been expanding his experiences.  When picked up he was in quite poor condition and needing some veterinary interventions before we would consider him for rehoming.  That time is fast approaching.

He is well behaved and good with children and adults alike.  He has lived with cats in the past but none in his foster placement.  He is a gentle dog and not boisterous as befits a more mature dog but he is keen to bark at the door bell or anyone he spots walking past our lane.  When visitors come in he does get excited and, like most labradors, will want to say hello and check for hidden sandwiches.  He is a large (tall) dog.  He is not a pure breed but he behaves like a labrador and largely looks like a labrador with a somewhat longer coat.

He walks quite well on the lead although keen to sniff and he has a recall (whistle and cheese) which is pretty good providing there are few distractions.  Much of this is a bit new for him but he does respond to consistent training and is biddable and keen to please.  He loves car rides and country walks; off the lead in appropriate places.  He does have a determined turn of speed when it suits him (ask how I know…)

When he came into foster he was not well socialised with other dogs but he now settles well with my two labradors.  He wants to meet all dogs he sees on walks but, on lead, he is quite respectful and will just sniff noses.

He has been castrated.

He does not like to be left alone and might bark or howl.  We are working on this aspect.  He just likes to be with his team.

He does not understand toys or balls but will chew a hard chew toy from time to time.

A mature but active and experienced home would suit this boy.  Able to put in some effort to get him trained and able to provide some gentle walks.  Sensitive to getting him really back on track without being too restrictive on what is demanded from him.  A home with occasional children would be ideal.
