Wesley is 12yrs old and came into LRSEC’s care through no fault of his own. He is a very energetic and happy boy who loves nothing more than to be fussed all day. Like many older dogs he suffers from stiff joints, a few dodgy teeth and an ongoing skin allergy. Wesley is currently in a lovely foster home where he is made a fuss of all day long – like every senior dog deserves. LRSEC currently meet the ongoing costs of Wesley’s treatments. Harvey is 9 years old and through no fault of his own was unwanted. He suffers from hip dysplasia and an allergy to fleabites and dust mites. Harvey is a super, friendly old chap who loves everyone, but nobody was interested in him because of his medical problems. At the moment he is on Rimadyl for his HD, Collapex for his joints, Malaseb shampoo and Imuseb injections once a month for his allergy, amounting to around £200 per month in veterinary fees. Although Harvey is now happy in a long term foster home where he is absolutely adored and cared for, LRSE&C still meet his ongoing medical costs. Can you help Harvey? Bruno came to LRSE&C needing a new home through no fault of his own. A little while down the line Bruno had formed a callous that would not heal on the tip of his tail and to prevent infection Bruno underwent an operation to remove the tip. During the Xrays it was discovered that Brunos random limping was due to problems that only an orthopaedic surgeon would be able to sort out and further investigation was needed. It turned out that there was displasia in both elbows his right wrist was broken in three places! Bad growth of his bones had caused them to not form properly. An operation was carried with various nails and bolts being inserted and bones were fused together. We were informed that the other leg wasn’t so bad but would need an operation some time in the future. The second operation wasn’t as bad as the first and Bruno made a very quick recovery. We really thought Bruno was out of the woods at last! But he started to limp again with pain. After further x-rays it was discovered that things seemed to have had a knock-on effect on his shoulder. For some weeks after a steroid injection there was some improvement, but it was only temporary as the limp has become steadily worse. Bruno continues to undergo further treatments to elevate pain and to ensure he has a good quality of life. Bruno is very happy in his new family but LRSE&C continue to support his ongoing costs.

Sandy & Chester came into our care on an emergency basis. Upon a check up at the vets it was found that Sandy had an infected ear and a lump was found on his body. Both dogs are very close and needed to be together, Chester seemed to have very poor vision and relies greatly on Sandy when running and playing. A foster home was found for them and further treatment showed that Chester’s cataracts needed removing, one was however much worse than the other. The initial reports are encouraging and the Surgeon was actually able to insert a new lens. They are both continuing to make huge improvements however the cost of their ongoing medication and treatments are met by the charity. Can you help this brotherly pair with their treatment costs? Cocoa is a 2 year old chocolate bitch who came to us in November 2005 following a change of family circumstances of the previous owner which resulted in cocoa regularly being left all day. Unfortunately Cocoa suffers from congenital cataracts and as such has very little vision in one eye, and the other eye is deteriorating. In addition she has a rotary nystagmus whereby the eyes continually oscillate (somewhat similar to the flautist James Galway). Cocoa needs ongoing treatment and visits to the Animal Health Clinic for her vision problems. Despite her vision problems Cocoa seems to be handling things really well and with Rosie’s help appears to be growing in confidence and enjoying life and has become LRSE&C ‘Dog of Courage’ for 2006. |

Wiggle is a 5 year old Labrador with a severe skin condition who is in a foster home while he receives treatment for his itchy skin. Despite being bald in places and very sore, Wiggle is a happy, waggy boy who loves playing fetch and greets everyone he meets with kisses. Wiggle's care is going to be long term and expensive but this boy has such a fantastic temperament he deserves very special care before he is ready for rehoming.

Jack 12 1/2 year old Jack was signed over to Labrador Rescue when his owners emigrated and went into kennels where he was treated for the mange and medication for the arthritis. Fromt that bit of extra care he went from hardly being able to get off the floor and move to enjoying daily walks.
After a month Jack was placed in a foster home. Unfortunately a lump in his tummy which turned out to be a tumour on his spleen. In May 2008 Jack was operated on to remove his spleen and a total of three tumours - the largest being the size of a football and weighing just over 2.5kgs. The operation lasted for 3 hours and it was touch and go towards the end but Jack made an amazing recovery for such an old boy.
Jack is a lovely happy old boy who loves his cuddles, balls - tennis balls that is, walks and meeting the ladies. He will remain on medication for his arthritis and skin condition for the rest of his life and at the time of his operation it was found he has an enlarged heart and may need medication at some point in the future.

Barney came into LRSE&C care as his owners no longer wanted him. Through no fault of his own Barney was petrified of men, he kept cowering down, he was painfully thin, you could see all of his ribs, he had been sitting in his own excrement, which had led to the development of nasty sores on his tail and right ear. His hair had worn away from his hocks and he had a parasitic infection down his back. Barney was prescribed a treatment for the skin condition on his back. The sore on his tail was assessed and despite several attempts to get the sore to heal, we were left with no choice - Barney had to have over three quarters of his tail removed. He has been left with a docked tail of around 2 inches. The vet is really pleased with Barney's progress, he is gaining weight slowly, his hair is growing back and the skin infection is almost gone. Barneys foster family described him as ¡a wonderful dog who just wants to be loved, he has wonderful longing eyes and is so trusting. Barney has come into our family and has settled in well. He gets on very well with the cats. Barney is great with kids and if he has not eaten his dinner in 30 seconds you can confidently take his food from him. Oscar is 2 years old. We were asked to rehome Oscar through no fault of his own. We noticed he was suffering with eye problems and was diagnosed with entropia (a condition where the eyelids turn partly in so that the eyelashes touch the eye). He had an operation which was unfortunately unsuccessful. The irritation and eye damage continued. He now has reduced vision and as a result feels very uncomfortable and vulnerable. He is in foster care at present and is awaiting further appointments to correct his problems. Can you help towards the costs of Oscar’s ongoing treatment and medication? |
Labrador Rescue South East and Central is not just about rehoming Labradors, but is about the welfare of all Labradors. To this end we have many dogs in long term foster care that need expensive veterinary treatment and care.
